Gardening in Florida | David Barr Realtor | Venice and Nokomis FL

I get a lot of questions about Nokomis and Venice gardening when I am working with clients moving here from other parts of the country.

Yes, you can plant a non-food garden in your non-deed restricted Venice or Nokomis neighborhood.

If you are buying a home in a gated community, your HOA is probably going to be more restrictive on what you can plant. Example: fruit trees are most likely not allowed ( they attract pests), but flowering bushes and trees probably are allowed. The HOA management will give you approval for a list of plants you want in your garden space.

Keep in mind, many homes in gated communities are maintenance free, and your garden can't interfere with lawn mower access. The lawn maintenance company probably won't water, trim, or fertilize a garden area you've added to your home.

I'm approaching this post assuming the reader is already a gardener and understands the basics of sun exposure and drought tolerance. Some of the more popular drought tolerant Nokomis FL garden plants, which you can get at a Lowe's or Home Depot garden center, are Flax Lily, Crossandra, Asperagus ferns, Areca Palms, Firecracker Bush, and Aloe. I can also recommend some local nurseries where you can pick from a more interesting list.

If you have a large lot, a Bottlebrush or a Butterfly bush are unusual, and would make a great statement.

Please enjoy some photos of my own garden, and contact me for all your Venice and Nokomis real estate needs.
